Avro Lancaster B Mk.III Dambuster ® was a British four-engined strategic bomber that was modified from the B.Mk.III for a special mission Operation Chastise, known as the „Dambuster Raid”. Twenty- three aircraft of this type were built to carry the bouncing bomb for the dam-busting raids.
These changes resulted in the Avro Lancaster B Mk.III taking its place in history as the “Dambuster”. 617 Squadron was formed on 21 March 1943. The crews included RAF personnel of several nationalities including Royal Canadian Air Force, Royal Australian Air Force, and the Royal New Zealand Air Force and were based at RAF Scampton, Lincolnshire.
617 Sqn’s specific task was to attack three major dams that contributed water and power to the Ruhr industrial region in Germany: the Mohne, Eder, and Sorpe. The plan was given the codename Operation Chastise and carried out on 17 May 1943.
Operation Chastise was a high-risk bombing raid carried out by the Royal Air Force on the night of 16/17 May 1943. The raid was led by Wing Commander Guy Gibson, 617 Squadron, and involved 19 specially modified Lancaster bombers. The aircraft were equipped with a new weapon called the 'bouncing bomb' which was designed to skip across the water and hit the dam wall below the
waterline.
The attack on German dams carried out on the night of 16/17 May 1943 by 617 Squadron RAF Bomber Command, using special „bouncing bombs” enabled the allies to destroy dams; power stations , factories and mines.
