This scholarly review of aviation aspects of the "forgotten war" is the little-known story of how brave Royal Air Force Dakota crews, aiming for areas not much bigger than a suburban garden, dropped supplies to the besieged Allied armies at Kohima, one of the bloodiest battles of World War II.
The 52-minute documentary is written and presented by Terence O'Halloran, who, as a young airman in 31 Squadron, and afterwards as joint Curator of the Squadron Museum, met veterans of the South-East Asia air campaign and learned their stories.
His explanation of the battles of Imphal and Kohima and of air support for the Chindits, supported by many relevant images and archive film, will increase understanding of the forgotten war.
The programme was unwittingly triggered by the remarks of a young woman, a grand-daughter of a Burma veteran, outside York Minster after a service of remembrance. She had heard only of the American air efforts..... only part of the
story.
Terence, who went on to be a successful businessman and President of the Lincolnshire Chamber of Commerce, realised that even now, 80 years later, the story of RAF involvement is little understood. He was also mindful that many crews were shot down by the Japanese enemy and crashed into dense jungle, their bodies never
to be recovered.
The programme was originally made in support of the British-based Kohima Educational Trust whose mission is to help young people in the indigenous Naga community today in enduring gratitude for wartime support of the Nagas for the Allied forces.
